The Studios

The Two Studios at Electrical Audio

Electrical Audio has two unique studios plus living accommodations for clients. Both of our studios are setup to record and mix to analog tape and digital, or whatever hybrid you can imagine.

Most structural walls in both studios are made of adobe earth brick, which has a number of advantages for studio use. The adobe walls are heavy and dense, which helps limit sound transmission, and the slightly soft, malleable nature of the unfired brick allows the walls to settle without forming cracks. In addition, the adobe absorbs vibration rather than transmitting it the way ceramic or crystalline materials do.

The studio walls are built on masonry foundation walls that rise from the basement of the studio, which are themselves built on footings cut into the earth beneath the basement. In this way, each studio is effectively a separate building, with its own footing, foundation, walls and structural ceiling, unattached to either adjacent studio rooms or the exterior of the building. This provides excellent isolation from the outside world and the other rooms in the studio.

All microphones, drum kits, keyboards, instruments, amplifiers, cabinets and other equipment are shared between studios. If you plan to use a piano as a feature on your session let us know and we'll schedule a tuning of that piano directly prior to your session. You can see a list and descriptions of our mics, instruments, and equipment here.

In addition to Pro Tools HDX, throughout the studio we have standardized on Studer A820 multitrack machines (convertible between 16- and 24-track) and Ampex ATR-102 stereo mixdown machines (refurbished by ATR Services and convertible between 1/2-inch and 1/4-inch), all kept in perfect order by our in-house technical engineer Greg Norman. All machines are aligned and calibrated for every session. We can do full-digital sessions, full-analog sessions, or any hybrid you desire.

Studio A is the larger and fancier of our studios. There are three performing rooms with different acoustics and a large, comfortable control room. Studio A is ideal for sessions with a lot of people, or where isolation between groups of instruments is critical. The control room has a large-format 56-channel custom Neotek Elite console and a bountiful collection of outboard equipment.

Studio B is a slightly less-fancy studio at a lower cost, though still providing the first-rate acoustics and the capabilities of a professional studio. It has two large performing spaces, a vocal booth, and a control room with a 36-input Neotek Series II console and a complete complement of outboard equipment, corresponding closely to the collection in studio A.

Client Offices & Living Areas—Studio A and Studio B each have their own mini-lounge. Our client offices are currently unavailable while we implement COVID-19 precautions.
